Is it better to plant potatoes in mounds or rows? I've met many gardeners who swear they get far better yields growing potatoes in mounds. I've tried both methods and can't say I prefer one over the other. Space is often the determining factor since growing in rows takes up a lot more real estate than growing in mounds does. For maximum yields, you need to make sure each plant has enough space to reach its full potential without having to compete for sunlight or nutrients otherwise not only will you get fewer potatoes, those you do get will tend to be small and misshapen. When planting in rows, space your seed potatoes twelve to eighteen inches apart in rows thirty inches apart. When planting in mounds, each mound should be three to four feet in diameter, which is large enough to hold six to eight plants. If you're planning on growing potatoes this year, you'll need to get them in the ground soon. Potatoes are usually planted prior to the last frost.
