The New York Times website has an interview this week with a pair of garlic farmers in Minnesota. It's a great article for anyone out there who likes growing these durable bulbs. It discusses the differences between hard-necked and soft-necked garlic and gives the names varieties that have done well for these farmers. It also interests me that this duo is growing many heritage varieties and anyone who preserves and propagates old strains is going to get my support.

I don't know if this story about the caretakers of Ralph Waldo Emerson's house that appears on the New York Times website is appropriate for a gardening blog, but I like the idea of living in an historic building and maintaining its grounds. And judging by the photographs in the accompanying slide show, I couldn't possibly do a worse job than the current caretakers. Unless, of course, the lawn is supposed to look like it's been trimmed by cattle. In which case, it looks magnificent.

For those of you looking for plants that will add a little pizzazz to your fall garden, this article on the HGTV website has some excellent suggestions. It also reminds me that I've been meaning to put some Boltonia in my garden for years.
