I don't know how I missed this story posted last month on the MacLean's website, but I did. It seems France no longer has any choice but to cut down and destroy the 40,000 remaining historic plane trees that line the country's famed Canal du Midi because of an invasive fungus they have not been able to control.

Feeling a little impractical today? If so, The Guardian website has a craft project that will be right up your alley. In honour of Britain's National Apple Day (it really exists) someone has come up with a jacket - really a sweater - that you can crochet to keep your apples warm. That's not a metaphor.

I can't imagine liking a plant so much that I would have its image tattooed on my arm, but one gardening enthusiast feels strongly enough about carnivorous plants that he has done just that. This article in the New York TImes examines the sudden, surprising, popularity of herbaceous carnivors, particularly among the males of our species.
