No one can run with a bee story quite like the BBC. The story posted to their website this week looks at a study that shows bumblebees are much more prevalent in gardens than they are in agricultural fields. When a garden is located next to a farm, the positive effect of all those extra bees extends a kilometre into the fields, proving once again that gardeners are good for the environment.

The New York Times has a fantastic slide show featuring the winners of the 2010 Olympus BioScapes Photomicrography competition. The slide show features microscopic photographs of all sorts of neat things, including a weevil's head, a single coral cell, a rat's hippocampus, and a damselfly's eyes. You'll be amazed at the saturated colors in the photographs as well as the close up views of things you don't normally get to see.

I was skimming the Winnipeg Free Press website the other day when I stumbled across hands down the best article I've read detailing how conifers react to cold temperatures, why they can burn in the late winter, and what gardeners can do to protect them. I was surprised to learn that wrapping conifers in burlap is not recommended since I've been telling people to do that for years.
