Ignore the title of this article in the Vancouver Province, which makes it seems as though it's about letting your lawn go brown in the summer. The article is actually about good watering practices and has several excellent suggestions for how to water more effectively.

I wanted to love the garden featured in a photo tour on the Calgary Herald's site, but mostly it left me scratching my head as to why this garden won an award from the Calgary Horticultural Society. My first thought when I saw it was 'how sterile'. I mean, where are the weeds? And if there are no weeds, what are the chances that insects, reptiles and small, furry creatures come out to frolic when no one is looking? Granted my own garden is a haven for living creatures, including some spectacularly healthy weeds, and no one will ever give me an award, so maybe I'm just jealous.

This article in The Globe and Mail is a week old, but it discusses that favorite passtime of gardeners: weeding. I mean, it must be our favorite, right? We spend so much time doing it, we often neglect other maintenance issues just so we can yank little green invaders out of the ground. Only a crazy person would spend that much time on something they didn't enjoy.

"When gardeners garden, it is not just plants that grow, but the gardeners themselves."

"The earth is a garden, and each of us need only care for our own part for life to be breathed back into the planet, into the soil, into ourselves."
